Ivanovich Demuth-Malinovsky

A native of St. Petersburg, the family of a Woodcarver. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1785-1800) under Professor M. I. Kozlovsky. The bas-relief of "angel brings the Apostle Peter from the darkness" (1799) he received a gold medal of the 2nd degree. For and performed with other artists of the bas-reliefs at the monument to Peter I B.-K. Rastrelli was awarded the gold medal of the 1st degree. Received 1st prize in the competition of projects of the grave monument sculptor M. I. Kozlovsky (1803). A pensioner IAH in Italy (1803-1806), where he enjoyed the advice of A. Canova. For the sketch of the statue of "Elijah the Prophet" received the title of academician (1807). Participated in the decoration of the Kazan Cathedral (the statue of "St. Andrew") and Mining Institute (sculptural group "Abduction of Proserpine by Pluto", bas-relief friezes). Performed figures of caryatids for "office use" of the Pavlovsk Palace (1808). Taught at the Imperial Academy of arts (1808), awarded the title of Professor for the sculpture "Russian Scevola" (1813), Emeritus Professor (1833), rector of the Imperial Academy of arts in sculpture (1836). With S. S. Pimenov took part in the sculptural decoration of the Admiralty (1812-1814), designed the sculpture of the arch of the General staff. Author tombstones, E. I., Baryshnikova A. and N. Voronikhin (1814). Worked in the art of monumental and decorative sculpture. For the ensemble of Yelagin Palace in St. Petersburg has created a decorative sculpture of the Oval hall and the dining room (1820-1821). The decoration of the Mikhailovsky Palace have completed the frieze between the columns of the portico, consisting of 44 individual reliefs, as well as a large sculptural group on the attic side of the Mikhailovsky garden; designed the Grand staircase of the castle. Participated in the design of Public library building: they sang a statue of Minerva over the pediment, the figures of Demosthenes, Hippocrates, Euclid and sculpted frieze. Created statues of Terpsichore and Erato for the building of the Alexandria theater. Participated in the creation of stucco decorations for the interiors of the Winter Palace, the design of the Narva triumphal gates and the buildings AH. Author of monuments to Catherine II in St. Troitskoye-Kaynardzhi (1833-1834), to Ivan Susanin in Kostroma (1838-1846).

Born in St. Petersburg 2 (13) March 1779 in the family of Ukrainian Vasily Demoute, who served at the Admiralty, "carved case master." Studied in the Petersburg Academy of arts (1785-1800) under M. I. Kozlovsky. Winning the competition, performed a tombstone of his teacher (marble, 1802, now in the necropolis of Alexander Nevsky Lavra) with high relief athletic the Genius of death. Living in an academic "pensioner" in Rome (1803-1807), used the advice of A. Canova.

Returning to St. Petersburg (1807), in the same year received the title of academician. Since then actively participated in the sculptural decoration of a number of significant new buildings of the Northern capital – the Mining Institute (group of the Abduction of Proserpine by Pluto and bas-reliefs, 1809-1811), Kazan Cathedral (the statue of the Apostle Andrew, 1811), Admiralty (personifications of Europe, Asia, the Yenisei and Lena, 1812-1815; destroyed during the renovations of the building in 1860), the Academy of fine arts (high relief Architecture in the interior, 1819), the Mikhailovsky Palace (now the Russian Museum; the bas-reliefs between the 2 columns and pediment, 1823-1825), the arch of the General staff building on Palace square (chariot of Victory the allegory of Fame and other figures; together with S. S. Pimenov; 1827-1829), the Winter Palace (decor Funeral (cavalry) and some other halls, 1827-1830, 1838-1840), Public library (the statues of Minerva, Herodotus and Demosthenes, 1830-1831), of the Senate and Synod (8 figures geniuses, 1832-1833) and other buildings. Strictly classic works (done generally of Pudozh stone, bronze or copper) perfectly fit into the architectural proportions and rhythms, enhancing their rhetorical grandeur.

A notable feature of his works include the figure of the Russian Scevola (the peasant who, according to legend, cut off his arm after the Napoleonic soldiers had placed on her label; gypsum, 1813, Russian Museum), portrait bust of A. V. Suvorov (gypsum, 1814, Museum of the Academy of fine arts, St. Petersburg), funerary monument of M. Barclay de Tolly in his former estate of Jõgeveste near the town of tõrva Estonia (bronze, marble, of 1821-1823), acting monument to Susanin in Kostroma (1841-1843). According to his model, and executed the monument to Prince Vladimir, established in Kiev after the death of the sculptor, in 1853. Taught at the Academy of fine arts in 1808-1837, he was the Director of the Department for sculpture (1836). Died Demut-Malinovsky in St. Petersburg, 16 (28) July 1846.
