Biography and information

In adolescence the artist visited in Moscow School of painting and sculpture, where among his teachers were A. K. Savrasov.

Apparently, the family of the young talent has decided that Alexander continued his studies at the St Petersburg Academy of arts. Volnoprihodyaschim student of this single, while the higher art educational institution in Russia, Popov was in 1850. In this capacity he remained for fifteen years, when in 1865 he was awarded the title of class artist of landscape painting in the first degree.

 

By the time the name of A. Popov was known to art lovers, for during his studies he had repeatedly received from the leadership Academy promotion: a small silver medal in 1858 for "View in Kuntsevo", large silver medal in 1860 for landscape "Moscow. Bank of the Yauza", a small gold medal in 1861 for the two "View from the vicinity of Moscow".

Note that all of these landscapes are associated with the image of Moscow and its environs. Apparently, the artist regularly visited her, loved her and in order to differ from its rather numerous namesakes in the artistic environment, he added to his name very obliging alias.
