"Shootout in the mountains of Dagestan" (1840–41; oil on canvas; GLM). According to the testimony of E.P. Shan-Girey, Lermontov presented this painting to A.A. Hastatov. In the 1880s the inscription “In the mountains of Dagestan. M. Yu. L. ”. In 1940, the picture entered the State. lit. Museum from private hands. The inscription on it disappeared, but Lermontov’s authorship was established by examination. The painting depicts a skirmish between Russians and Chechens hidden in the rubble of mountains, that is, it reflects events from the life of L., who participated in military operations in Dagestan in 1840.
