Nar. hood. USSR (1961), corresponding member Q. AH THE USSR (1954). Member of the CPSU(b) since 1952. He graduated from Kaunas hood. school (1926), 1927-31 he studied in studios in Paris. From 1931 he taught at hood. universities in Kaunas and Vilnius, and from 1946 the Professor. The bas-relief of "Mother" (1935), the statue for the pavilion at the world exhibition in new York "Lithuania" (1939), the monument "Victory" in Kaliningrad (1946), the monument to M. Melnikaite in Zarasai (1947-55), indoor sculpture "wood Carver" (1938), "portrait of a farm" (1957), "the Young pianist" (1958), "the World" (1960), "the Fisherman, a fisherman's daughter and I" (1961), "the First swallows" (1964) etc. The Winner Of The St. St. (1947).

[30.1(12.2).1901, farm Skarupa, now the district of Daugavpils of the Latvian SSR, — 24.10.1964, Vilnius], a Soviet sculptor, the founder of the Lithuanian Soviet sculpture, people's artist of USSR (1961), corresponding member AH the USSR (1954). A member of the CPSU from 1952. He studied at the Kaunas art school (1922-26) Yu Vienozinskio and C. Sclerus in Paris (1927-31) at the Higher school of decorative and applied arts in the studios of S. Despiau and M. Gimona. He taught at the Kaunas Art school (1931-40) and the Institute of applied and decorative art (1946-51), in Vilnius at the Art Institute of the Lithuanian Soviet socialist Republic (1940-1941 and 1951) and OH (1941-46; Professor from 1946). Students: G. Jokubonis, J. Medinis, K. Kisielis. For works of M. typical of the romantic generalizations and at the same time, the subtle spirituality of the images; the energy of the internal structure of the volume is combined with differentiated picturesque modelling of the surface. Works: male portrait (gypsum, 1935); a bas-relief of "Mother" (marble, 1935), "the Woodcarver" (plaster, 1937-1938) — both in the Kaunas art Museum. M. K. čiurlionis; the statue of "Lithuania" the Lithuanian pavilion at the world exhibition in new York (gypsum, 1939); the group "Victory" — part of the monument to the 1200 soldiers of the guards who fell in the assault of Koenigsberg, Kaliningrad (bronze, 1946; State prize of the USSR, 1947); the monument to M. Melnikaite in the city of Zarasai (bronze, 1947-55); "Young pianist" (bronze, 1958, Tretyakov gallery), "the World" (GIPS, 1960, property of the Ministry of culture of the USSR), "The first swallows" (plaster, 1964, Art Museum of the Lithuanian SSR, Vilnius): State prize of the Lithuanian SSR (1966).
