Biography and information

Painter. Member of the Union of artists of the USSR.

Born in 1918, in Alexandrapol, died in 1980 in Yerevan.

In 1937 he graduated from the Yerevan art College, and in 1946 the Riga Academy of arts. He studied at the Studio art professors Aria Skride, where already a student forever define his creative passions. To realistic method, it results in a closer communion with nature, the knowledge of reality and experience the world of cutting edge art.

In a short time he achieves a sonority and transparency of color, skillfully using a color reflection. The impressions received from contact with nature are passed directly and sincerely. The created images are becoming more acute and deep inward content.

Staying true to realistic principles of the Armenian national and world classical art, he takes over the original reality, everyday life with its endless variety.

Grant Stepanyan had broad musical interests. The artist created many works in different genres - paintings on historical and revolutionary themes, portraits, landscapes, still lifes, in which his creative abilities are manifested with equal force.

Genuine element G. Stepanian is a portrait. The work is characterized not only by the exigencies of the similarities, but also marksmanship, personal depth of character, content and diversity of the used pictorial means. His art is an integral part of twentieth century. It absorbed the advanced tradition and everything new that brings with it the development of modern painting.

In 1973 personal exhibition of G. Stepanian attracts the attention of the creative segments of society. In 1939 the exhibition dedicated to the Millennium of the heroic epos "David of Sasun", his painting "the Resettlement of Armenians" awarded high marks. This and many other paintings now in the National Gallery of Armenia, state Tretyakov Gallery, the Museum of literature and art after Yeghishe Charents, Museum of the city of Yerevan, in the House-Museum of Khachatur Abovyan, State Conservatory after Komitas, in the Museum of the great Patriotic War, the exhibition halls of many foreign countries, in private collections.

In 1972 in Yerevan, the Union of artists of Armenia issued a catalogue devoted to the personal exhibition of Hrant Stepanyan.
