In his bequest there are a number of software works. The early works of such a plan are "Commissioners"and "Putejtsy" stored in the Serpukhov historical and art Museum. This is custom work. But in spite of partisanship, and good for the preparatory work, as evidenced by the remaining preparatory drawings, sketches. Paintings of the "severe style", typical of the ' 70s, with their campaign fervor, romantic elation. Boldly accented sonority of colors and their intensity create a major tonality works. Plot the relationship between the characters is missing. They appear as romantic heroes of his time.

The software works from the ' 70s should be attributed to the painting "old city". High point of view allows to cover all the space marketplace, something resembling the old market of Serpukhov. Scattered here and there buildings, bustling people, peasants, the uptake for three, horse waiting for master, as if descended from the ancient national pictures. The wizard uses the techniques of folk primitivism, translated into the language of high scenic professionalism.

In the last years of his life Ivan Shatov intended to write a series of works dedicated to Peter I. But managed to build only one – "Peter I" Preseason the lake."

People are always interested in the artist. He loved the scope and reliability in people, loved his candor and courage, lyricism and warmth. These are the "Portrait of a shepherd from the village of Volkovo," "Portrait of a Siberian I. T. Antropova" and especially the portraits of loved ones. In three self-portraits depicted the three stages of the life of Efim Shatov. Early romantic, full of enthusiasm. The portrait of the ' 70s – a Mature, thoughtful look at the life of a person. And last, with a degree of frustration, fatigue and at the same time of wisdom on the face.

The artist loved the outdoors. Wrote a lot of landscapes, different in mood – romantic, in the spirit of Rylova and lyrical. They are always exactly matched the state of nature, he admires the unique beauty of the simple landscape motif. His landscapes, contemplative, expressive, romantic, like "Crimea. The old fortress", in which the arch of the fortification wall visible to the infinite sea blue with white lonely boat.

In his still lifes, the master always sought to transfer the material beauty of things around us. Classic composition and painterly manner, they delight beautiful colors and some of his "old rigor".
