A layer of clay or chalk makes it easy to remove ink from the surface of the cardboard without damaging it.
Actually the word "scratchboard" means in English "scratching" as well as "scratchboard" in French. Only on the basis of scratchboard for illustration as a layer between the paper (cardboard) and ink acts as wax or paraffin, and in the scratchboard this role is fulfilled by white clay or chalk.
