Born in Moscow into the family of a diplomat, major of the Imperial guard Nicholas I. Education received in St. Petersburg. In Berlin in 1862 came to Paris, where he took lessons from the famous watercolorist, Professor of landscape painting by A. Cassani. A strong influence on the artist has made acquaintance with Monet and K. Rothman. Traveled extensively in Italy and Finland, exhibited in various galleries of Europe. In 1876 – 1878 held solo exhibitions in Berlin, in 1885 – in Zurich. Until 1904 he lived and worked in Kassel, in 1904 – 1905 – in Bonn. He was widely known for his landscapes and townscapes. Worked in the techniques of watercolor, pastels, collage. Works are kept in many museums and galleries in Western Europe and in private collections around the world.
