Biography and information

Jacques d Agar (FR. Jacques d'agar, it. Jacob d' Agar; 1642, Charenton-Le-Pont — 16 Nov 1715, Copenhagen) was a French portrait painter.

In 1675 he became a member of the Paris Academy of fine arts as a historical painter. However, on 31 January 1682, the revocation of the edict of Nantes, was expelled from the Academy as a Protestant.

The agar was removed to England and there became famous for painting portraits, then worked in the courts of Northern Germany and, finally, were invited to Copenhagen, where king Christian V made him his Chamberlain. The same arrangement was used by it and the successor of Christian V, Frederick IV.

Agar undoubtedly had an influence on painters of Denmark, where he spent the best time of his life.

Son of Charles Agar was also a portrait painter.
