Afonso

Jorge Afonso (port. Jorge Afonso, rod. 1470 — mind. 1540), a Portuguese painter of the Renaissance.

J. Afonso in 1508, becoming court painter to the Portuguese king Manuel I, and in 1529 he holds the position of court painter of king John III. Art workshop Afonso was in Lisbon, near the Church of Santo Domingo. In this workshop received artistic training a whole generation of Portuguese artists — cristóbal de Figueiredo, Garcia Fernandes, Gregorio Lopes, Jorge Leal, among others. J. Afonso is known primarily as a master of religious altar paintings. At the direction of Queen Leonor, widow of king joão II and sister of king Manuel I, the artist adorns the altar in the convent of Madre de Deus in Lisbon (now in the National Museum of ancient art. Between 1520 and 1530 Afonso creates, also commissioned by Queen Leonora, 14 altar panel for the convent of Jesus in setúbal. Wall paintings from the brush of J. Afonso, relating to 1530, can be seen in the round Church of the convent of Christ in Tomar.
