Sir Matthew Smith (eng. Sir Matthew Smith, rod. 1879 Halifax, England — mind. 1959) is an English post — impressionist artist.
M. Smith was born into a wealthy family; the future artist's father was a successful businessman and Amateur musician. M. Smith studied painting at Manchester School of art (1900-1904) and at the School of art Slade (1905-1907). Since 1910, continuing training in France, at the art Studio of Henri Matisse, and falls under the creative influence of Fauvism. To this period belongs the series of works by M. Smith under the title Kowalskie landscapes (e.g., a picture of Fitzroy street, No. 1 (1916)).
In 1944 the publishing house Penguin, in a series of Contemporary artists (Penguin Modern Painters) comes out written by Philip Hendi biography M. Smith, with 16 black-and-white and 16 color illustrations of paintings by the artist.
