Description of the artwork «May picnic (Breakfast on the grass)»

Is it possible by looking at May picnic Signie-Merche, do not recall the many impressionistic "breakfasts"? Mane and Monet had already sent their company of young people and girls to have breakfast in nature by the time the picture was written. Perhaps, in this case, an analogy with a peaceful decentBreakfast »Monet, but not with a scandalous picnicwith naked girls Edouard Manet.

Heroes are located in an open space, and the composition is so built up (more precisely, that the author has somewhat neglected the rules of composition) that his gaze “falls” into the company located in the clearing. Signie-Mersch introduces the plot into the plot - vacationers are not equivalent, it is obvious that two young people are actively trying to capture the attention of two girls. All of them are depicted in a half-turn, we see their enthusiastic faces. Two more men are left to their own devices: one is searching for something in the grass, the other lies on a plaid. The face of the first is hidden by a wide-brimmed hat, the second is turned away from the viewer. It seems that the author himself is less interested in them than two flirty pairs.

The light green space of the clearing in the background merges with the blue sky. Red plaids and flowers to the right of the girl in pink demonstrate the outstanding ability of Signey-Mersch to use color contrasts. More than 20 years later, it is unconditionally confirmed by his magnificent Maki.
