Biography and information

Sienese painter, the founder of the artistic dynasty Bartolo, also known as the dynasty Fix. Researchers attribute the date of birth of Bartolo di Fredi to about 1330, as the first historic document that mentions his name is dated 1353 year. In that year Bartolo together with Andrea Vanni leased premises for a Studio. Since they often worked in cooperation, carrying out orders together.

In 1355, Bartolo di Fredi was a member of the Guild of painters of Siena. Andrea Vanni and his brother Lippo Vanni in addition to the success they have achieved in art, had a successful career in the administrative field, occupying high positions in the government of Siena, and hardly one activity interfere with another, likely to help. Bartolo di Fredi, also was not a stranger to administrative work, in his lifetime, he held several different positions in the Siena government since 1372. In 1381, Bartolo di Fredi became a member of the Great Council.

Working in a large workshop together with respected in Siena masters as the brothers Vanni, Bartolo di Fredi was one of the most popular artists who worked in the second half of the 14th century. He received a lot of orders from Siena and the surrounding towns. This is evidenced by anecdotal evidence archival documents: in 1350 years he, along with Andrea Vanni decorated hall of the Grand Council of Siena; in 1361−1362, he worked in San Gimignano; in 1366 was painting a picture for the government of San Gimignano; in 1367 already in Siena decorated the Cathedral of Siena, together with Jacopo di Mino del Pellicciaio; in 1382 worked in the Church of San Francesco in Montalcino, writing there is a fresco of the «descent from the cross» and several altar paintings, including «Baptism of Christ» and «Scenes from the life of St Philip Metallicheskogo»; in 1389 together with Luca di Tomme, he is working on the altar of the Siena Cathedral, and so on, until the last days of his life. Some of his works are known from the documents, has not survived. For example, in 1368 Bartolo wrote altarpiece for the Church of San Lorenzo, from which today remained only two predelli (Siena, Pinacoteca).

In the early works of Bartolo di Fredi, the triptych «Madonna and child with saints» (1360, Perugia, national gallery of Umbria) and frescoes dedicated to the life of the virgin in the Church of San Agostino in San Gimignano (1361−1362) visible dependence on the art of Simone Martini and Lippo memmi. Later, from mid-1360-ies, the artist, Bartolo di Fredi produced his own, somewhat eclectic, but deeply personal style. He is better known for a later, Mature works («the Coronation of the virgin», 1388, Montalcino, Museum of religious art; «Triptych Carceri» 1388 (unassembled in various museums), «the adoration of the Magi», 1383, Vatican, Pinacoteca; «Bringing in the temple», 1388, Louvre, Paris). Bartolo’s works are kept in many museums of the world.

From Bartolo di Fredi had seven children, but only one of them survived their father. It was Andrea di Bartolo, who became quite a famous artist. Two sons, Andrea di Bartolo, in turn, also followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, becoming artists.
