Paintings Safronov: the mysterious magic of art

Childhood future artist was held in the usual large family of the Soviet soldier. Little Nicholas was spending time with his four brothers and sister — attachment to them and parents he has carried through his entire life. Subsequently, stepping on a creative path, he took the pseudonym "Nikas" — in memory of mother, who had a Finnish-Lithuanian roots.

Interest in drawing came from Safronov in high school. Dreaming of travels to faraway countries and adventures, he had to paint illustrations from the books — and quite successfully. After school, Nicholas entered the merchant Navy in Odessa and studied there for a skipper for one year. And then, something happened…

In 1973 the Odessa merchant Navy celebrated its 75th anniversary, and in connection with this event, the leadership of the school decided to encourage cadets who have distinguished themselves in their studies. The sailing ship "Comrade", on Board of which were specially selected crew of the best students of the naval school were sent sailing to the American coast — in Baltimore. Among the cadets-lucky was Nikas Safronov.

On the way to the destination the boat was caught in a violent storm, which lasted almost a day. When the raging ocean subdued his temper and the cadets were able to relax, an exhausted Nicholas fell into a deep sleep, more like passing out. According to Safronov, he had a gallery, which exhibited his paintings have not written them in reality. Beside him he found a "grandfather", which, passing from one leaf to another, commented on what he saw. Nicholas argued that the "grandfather", agreed, but at some point his mysterious interlocutor had disappeared. Lifting his head, Nikas Safronov saw him, the uplifting up, and realized that before him great Leonardo da Vinci. To the question "where are You going?" the genius painting left in silence Nikas directly in the hands of a large glowing inside the balloon. At this point, Safronov woke up with a clear understanding that he is an artist.

This dream was a turning point in the life of Nicholas. Returning from a voyage, he retired from the naval school and enrolled in the Rostov art College. There the future artist studied the secrets of craftsmanship, paying special attention to the works of Leonardo — artistic, philosophical, scientific. Thanks to the great Florentine Nikas Safronov has managed to find own style of drawing, not like any other.

Next was a job in the Rostov youth Theatre, service in the army, studying at the Vilnius art Institute — and all this time Nikas did not stop to improve their skills. His first paintings Safronov painted in the memorable 1973. Already in 1978, he received a personal exhibition, which brought him fame as a portraitist, surrealist and bold experimenter.

If you look closely at photos of paintings Safronova, you can see that at some point the canvas like draws you to himself, making him a character in the story. This effect is created by those special methods which are used by Nikas during operation. Light translucent mist, bright accents, a lot of small and carefully designed details make the observer look into the image and create the illusion of presence. As the artist himself admits, after a couple of hours of passionate work he finds himself involved in a picture like included in it.

For the artist Nikas Safronov, nothing is impossible: he boldly combines recognizable objects and surreal images, creating something new. A vivid example of such work is the painting "Crucifixion of Christ": the cross with the Savior placed in the night of Manhattan. The familiar silhouettes of skyscrapers with glowing Windows as if to hide the sins of their inhabitants for a fragile human figure, and the storm clouds in the distance cuts the glare of the setting sun.

Today the possibility to see films Safronova is not only the visitors of solo exhibitions of the artist, but also for the users of our art portal.
