At the beginning of his art career Georgia O'keeffe often favored abstract forms. She always was much more difficult to Express thoughts, feelings and emotions in words than to Express them with paint and brushes. But music, like painting, does not need words in order to be able to feel and understand. So O'keefe has long been obsessed with the idea of turning music into something visible to the eye. Work "Music pink and blue II" has become one of the attempts to bring this idea to life.
At some point, O'keefe permanently abandoned abstract paintings. The culprit was a scandalous exhibition of her beloved Alfred Stiglitz in 1921, where he presented dozens of images of the artist, including the most intimate parts of her body. The audience was shocked by such frankness, as, indeed, she and O'keefe. But Stiglitz, who idolized the body and face of his mistress, did not see nothing wrong to share their excitement with everyone. These pictures, despite the undeniable professionalism of their author and artistic value, have rendered the artist a disservice. And in her and in her paintings began to see only the sensuality and sexuality. And when in the gallery Stiglitz new paintings O'keeffe, homegrown analysts were accepted to compete in the selection of erotic metaphors, epithets and comparisons. And incredibly popular at that time, the writings of Sigmund Freud allowed to do this with a special scope and look smart. Needless to say, how the artist was discouraged and disappointed by this primitive and vulgar interpretation of his works. So O'keefe almost completely switched to the image color (which, of course, immediately began to compare it with reproductive organs) and South-Western American landscape paintings, but in all works continued to be guided by the same principles and techniques as in abstract paintings.
Music has always been an inexhaustible source of inspiration to O'keeffe: "I love music more than anything. Only the color makes me feel the same thrill". The artist gave preference to classical music (her collection of the works of Beethoven, Bach, Haydn, Schumann and many other composers of the XVIII-XIX centuries was almost the only one that O'keeffe took a long time, moving to new Mexico). Painting "Music pink and blue II", also written in 1919 "Blue and green music"was O'keefe trying to create their own visual Symphony, to a certain extent guided by the color descriptions of musical instruments Wassily Kandinsky.
