Born in Haarlem, Brackenburg was a student of Hendrik Mommers. The greatest influence on his work, however, has had a Jan Steen. Brakenburg, together with Cornelis by Dusetos, belong to the second generation of students of Adriaen van Ostade. In his work the peasant genre is viewed the bourgeois style of brushwork.
