Frenkel-Fresnel

1899−1981
10 Aug 1899 born Yitzhak Frenkel-Frenel (Yitzhak Frenkel-Frenel, also known as Alexandre Frenel), vydayusciisya of representatives of the Paris school, one of the founders of the Israeli school of fine art. Studied painting and graphics, and stained glass, set design, teaching activities.
In numerous publications the place of his birth is called Odessa. However, actually, the future artist was born in Berdichev (July 28, old style) and was named Isaac gershevich Isicom by Franklim.
Father Is Hersh worked as a trader in the dressing. And his great-grandfather - Levi Yitzhak Ben Meir of Berdichev was one of the most famous leaders of Hasidism. It was even called "Sangram was Israel", the intercessor for the Jewish people.
It is in his honor was named the first-born in the family of Frankley. In Berdichev still preserved mausoleum, erected over the grave of the righteous.
In 1910 the family moved to Odessa and living first in the house № 76 along the street of the assumption, and then B. Arnautskaya, in the house № 59. Isaac enrolled in the Second Treasury of Jewish elementary school, where trained clerks and accountants. Interestingly, in the certificate after graduation Isaac is only four drawing.
Despite a religious upbringing, in December 1915, he enrolled as a volunteer in the 2nd class of the Art school of the Odessa society of fine arts.

(Grigorovich). She opens the Studio in which 19-year-old Frankel continues his training alongside teaching at the Art school. From Exter he acquires his first experience as a stage artist.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, he has not contracted the ideas of the revolution. The thought of leaving Palestine, apparently strengthened after the next pogrom in Yelisavetgrad.
In 1919 he emigrated to Palestine on the ship "Ruslan" along with the part of the Jewish intelligentsia, which marked the beginning of the Third aliyah. In 1920 he founded with friends in Jaffa cooperative of artists, "Ha-Tomer" and the free art Studio in the gymnasium Herzliya, where he taught painting and sculpture and lectures on contemporary Jewish art.
In 1920, without much success, was the first art exhibition organized by Frenkel and his friends, and the work in the Studio, which he opened at the high school for training high school students met resistance from Orthodox Jews.
After the closure of the cooperative "Ha-Tomer" in 1921, he left to continue his education in Paris. For some time he lived in a colony of artists La Ruche ("Beehive") in Montparnasse, where he became friends with H. Sutin, M. Chagall, M. Kikoin, P. Flint, mane-Katz, J. Pasco, and other artists-immigrants from Eastern Europe. Works of this galaxy of Jewish artists who brought Judaica in the expressionism of the school of Paris, has had a significant impact on his paintings.
The artist goes to the famous School of fine arts, founded by cardinal Mazarin, and at the same time engaged in the studios of the Academy Grand Chaumiere in the sculptor Bourdelle and painter Henri Matisse.
Frankel went through stages of fascination with cubism, expressionism and abstractionism. Participated in the group exhibition "Via" gallery La Licorne (1923) and the exhibition of 33 Russian artists in the café "La Rotonde" (1925). Exhibited in the salon of independents (1924, 1925 and 1926), where two of his paintings buys the famous Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, and the salon d'automne (1924, 1925).
In 1925, Frenkel returned to Palestine and opened a Studio of fine arts at the School of the Histadrut in tel Aviv. Among his students was Shimshon Holtzman, Mordechai Levanon, David Hendler, Joseph Kusanagi and Zion, Tayar and etc. while he taught in the School of arts and crafts "Bezalel" in Jerusalem, where he was a teacher of Avigdor Stematsky, Yehezkel of Streichman, Moshe Castel, and Arie Aroha, and many others.
In 1929, in connection with the closing of the school and a wave of pogroms, again went to Paris. Participated in several group exhibitions in Paris galleries.
In 1934 he returned to Palestine and settled in Safed (Safed), where bought a house of the XII century, which later would become a Museum and repository of his works. Painted pictures, designed the costumes for the tel Aviv Habima theatre, was engaged in teaching. In 1948, after the proclamation of the independent state of Israel, together with M. Castel, S. Goltsman, H. Lerner, A. and M. Markerom Shemi founded in an abandoned Arab houses and restored from the ruins of the quarters of the old city of Safed on the slopes of mount Talol the artists quarter on the example of the Paris quarter of Montparnasse, where he opened workshops and galleries. This district eventually became the main attraction not only Safed, but also is one of the centers of artistic life in modern Israel.
In later years he often visited Paris and participated in the salons of Independent (1971, 1972) and French artists (1976), has been exhibited in galleries Romanet (1950-1954), M. Bernheim (1955), G. Mourgue (1958), Seine 38 (1974), J. Apesteguy and Contrescarpe (1975), Orangerie du Sénat (1978). Visited with solo exhibitions in London (1957), Zurich (1959), Cannes (1962), new York (1965, 1970), tel Aviv (1967), Munich (1969), nice (1972), Caracas and Rio de Janeiro (1973), Monaco and Sao Paulo (1974), Deauville (1975), Amsterdam (1977).
Represented Israel at the Venice Biennale (1950). Repeatedly awarded M. Dyzenhofa in the field of fine arts (1934, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1948), and prestigious international awards (1958, 1972, 1973).
Represented in museums in Israel, France and the USA, as well as in private collections around the world.
Frenkel-Frenel was the author of works devoted to the most important events in the life of the young state of Israel. The first meeting of the Knesset in 1948, portraits of Cabinet members and heads of the IDF captured in his paintings and graphics.
In 1973, in Safed, was opened House-Museum of the artist, which houses most of his works.
In 1979 was held the anniversary exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the artist, in the famous gallery Orangerie (Orangerie).
In 1981, the Fresnel died, and was buried in Safed.
