The son of a Bank employee. Early left an orphan. In 1905-1912 studied at the universities of Saint-Petersburg, Kiev, Moscow and received a diploma biologist.
In 1905 he studied drawing and painting in a private Studio S. I. Swietoslawski in Kiev. After two years of work in Kiev (1906-1908) went to Moscow in search of this "art of life", however, much success in the capital is not achieved.
In 1909-1910 took over the experience at the Moscow art school-Studio of K. F. Yuon and I. O. Dudin in 1911-1912 he studied at I. I. Mashkov and Pyotr Konchalovsky in Moscow.
In 1911 he visited Paris, and in 1912 went to cities in Russia, studying old Russian painting. In 1913-1914 he traveled to Italy. Wrote impressionistic landscapes, experimented in the spirit of cubism and Fauvism, used the techniques and imagery of Russian icons, Ukrainian folk, Italian fresco painting.
Member of the Association "World of art" in 1917.
In may 1917 he joined the Board of the Professional Union of artists-painters of Moscow (Soiv), 1918 the all-Russian Collegium on Affairs of museums and protection of monuments. Organized the collection from the front line of old master paintings from the collection of Prince Baryatinsky. In 1919, he taught in GShM.

In the autumn of 1919 he went to Kiev and then to Sevastopol
where he moved to Constantinople, since 1921 lived in
France
