*** Impressionism, which appeared more than a hundred years ago, is a phenomenon well studied and rather mysterious. Too different artists declared impressionists. Different in style, in spirit, and, most importantly, in the complex of their tasks. Considering the works of Tatyana Godovalnikova it is difficult to resist the word “impressionism”. The question is different, but what does this term give us for understanding the work of an individual artist? To be honest, very little, almost nothing. Maybe the question will be more interesting, but what is the focus of the artist Tatyana Godovalnikova? And immediately, to the vague term impressionism will be added a much more specific term - light, luminous flux. It is the luminous flux that constitutes the compositional, and often the plot, basis of the works of this artist. The light, whose plot function was noticed by Vermeer, in the works of T. Godovalnikova serves as a structure-forming element of the image. Analysis of the luminous flux and its exact characteristics become an indispensable condition for creating a reliable visual space. The magical aura of painting by T. Godovalnikov, the charm of the atmosphere of her works is a natural consequence of the authenticity of the key compositional link-light.
Working with light is one of the most interesting tasks in art. The theoretical principles of the luminosity of a pictorial work have been developed for a long time, but the practical implementation of these principles requires very serious mastery from the artist. Tatyana Godovalnikova clearly demonstrates fluency in the full range of the light “palette”. Direct solar illumination, creating a powerful major accent, in the excellent open-air landscape “Zna”. Subtle, contoured sounding of a stream of luminous flux in the picture “Wisteria”. The soft glow of a fading day in the twilight's transparent evening landscape. The luminosity of these works, the accuracy and certainty of their tone construction is striking. In the still life “Roses on blue”, the light flare becomes the main actor of the composition, building both the theme and the plot of the work as a phenomenon.
In the world of painting, the night landscape, and even more so the landscape with water, is one of the most complex scenes. Not every museum collection boasts successful nightly compositions. The reasons are quite obvious - the technical complexity of working from life on the night scenes and, at the same time, the complexity of working in a workshop without a reliable and successful full-scale sketch. The landscape “Fires of Balaclava” can be safely attributed to the works of the museum class. The fascinating atmosphere of a nightly, coastal city filled with light, the relaxed composition of a painting executed in a free painting manner — everything speaks about the work of a true master. Random success in the works of this level of complexity just does not happen.
Creativity Tatiana Godovalnikova, restrained by the plot range, focused on a multifaceted working out of favorite themes and motifs, deeply professional and, at the same time, artistic. And most importantly, this creativity continues ...
