Biography and information

Together with Willem van de Velde Bakhuyzen is considered the most popular marine painter in Holland. Bakhuizen also wrote of paintings on biblical subjects. Ludolf Bakhuysen started out as a calligrapher, in 1650 moved to Amsterdam, where the training took place at Allarta van Everdingen and Hendrik Jacobs of Dubbels. He devoted himself to the depiction of the sea achieved in this direction great artistic success. His Studio was visited by the princes and nobles and generously paid for his work. Its small format painting of a stormy sea are different well-chosen, with some cold tones of colors, they reveal the artist's attention to nature. Large canvases depicting the calm sea are examples of decorative painting. Received recognition and engravings of the artist.
