Toilet venus

Painting, XXI century, 90×70 cm

Description of the artwork «Toilet venus»

Free copy of the painting by F. Boucher. "The Toilet of Venus" was commissioned by the artist by his patroness - favorite of Louis XV Madame Pompadour for her Chateau Bellevue. Madame Pompadour herself played the main role in the play of the same name at the Theater of Versailles. On the canvas, Venus looks like a lady of the 18th century: she has a "porcelain" face with a languidly playful expression, gestures of a charming woman, a characteristic hairstyle with naturally lying curls, and all of it, despite the splendor of forms, looks like a doll. Cupids do not so much dress up this charming coquette as play with her hair and ornaments. Pigeons hover around Venus, sacred birds. The body of the beauty is painted in rare and exquisite, but somewhat unnatural tones. Boucher did this deliberately: he did not seek to imitate nature, explaining that nature is imperfect.
