Description of the artwork «Nereids»
The Nereids (Greek: Νηρηίδες) are sea deities, nymphs, daughters of Nereus and the oceanid Dorida in Greek mythology. They often accompany Poseidon, god of the sea, and can be friendly and helpful to sailors, such as the Argonauts in their search for the Golden Fleece.
Nereids symbolized everything beautiful and good that is in the sea. In myths and works of art, they are represented as very beautiful girls dressed in white silk robes trimmed with gold, their heads decorated with coral. The Nereids are particularly associated with the Aegean Sea; according to legends, they lived in its depths with their father Nereus in a large golden palace.
