Description of the artwork «Paris. Boulevard Of Capucines»

Paris, Boulevard des Capucines – it is the place where once stood the convent of the female branch of the Capuchin Order. In the history of impressionism, he is notable for the fact that in 1874 in the Studio of Nadar on the Boulevard des Capucines, 35 hosted the first exhibition of the Impressionists.

For the first time in Paris Korovin had been in the early 1900's thanks Savva Mamontov. Since then, almost every year, sometimes more often he came to the French capital (which at that time was the capital of modern art). And after the revolution emigrated to Paris, but that's another story. He loved Paris!

Konstantin Korovin created a wonderful series with the title "Lights of Paris". It includes about two dozen paintings, Paris at night, illuminated by the lights of the shop Windows and lights. Including there are an earlier version of "Boulevard des Capucines" (1906).

Of course, in the choice of object, it is not original. Paris – the favorite model of many artists. First, looking at Korovinskoe boulevards, recall the paintings of Claude Monet (1, 2). The French proclaimed the main characters of his paintings light and color. Refraction of light rays, the color contrasts and the glow effects – here that first of all they were interested in. They sought to convey a variety of impressions from fleeting observations in different lighting, so more often wrote the daytime – whether dawn, day or dusk. Although there were some exceptions: for example, Camille Pizarro and his "The Boulevard Montmartre. Night". But still most of the impressionist paintings illuminated by the sun – sometimes striking, sometimes descending or hidden behind the clouds.

In 80-ies in conversation with fellow artists Konstantin Korovin has been quoted that the daily landscapes – studied stage, artists from all parties have already mastered, what is the sunlight. But to write the night is new, is the "secret of night" (1, 2). He sought to understand. However, he was not the first. If the Impressionists preferred the light of day, the post impressionist van Gogh is world famous for its legendary "nights" (1, 2, 3). And in Russian art path "in the night" was laid a great lover of night landscapes by Arkhip Kuindzhi (1, 2, 3).

Paris by night, as a rule, Korovin writes small multidirectional brush strokes, the outlines of objects and people barely outlined. "Boulevard des Capucines", like many other of the Paris paintings, the artist shows us from above. In all likelihood, he loved to sit at the balcony of the hotel and write. The colors and dynamics in this case is more complicated than in the previous, early "Boulevard des Capucines". If 1906 color center clearly identified and specified angular lighted window, in the version of the 1911 is no longer that uniqueness, the picture is very dynamic, it conveys what is called the breathing city. The horizontal composition (as opposed to vertical in the previous version), we see not only the Boulevard, but the whole noisy intersection. This was the time the first cars. Amongst the throng are distinguishable and cars, and horses, and pedestrians. The evening light makes the city especially beautiful and it is casual, it's not the festive version of Paris for the "newcomers", so is he, from the inside, so it probably appears in the opinion of the Parisian. And, it seems, very like the future Parisian Konstantin Korovin – and along with those who have the opportunity to admire Korovinskoe "Lights of Paris".

By the way, Paris in the light of day in the works of Korovin is also great (1, 2)...
