Sobachko Shostak

She was born in 1883 in Veselinovtsy village in Kyiv region in the family of a poor peasant. She died in 1966, her talent for painting was discovered by artist E. Pribylska. Sobachko-Shostak's works made in the spirit of Ukrainian wall paintings were first demonstrated at the exhibition of applied arts in Moscow in 1915. In 1919 colourful panels of Sobachko-Shostak were included into the festive May Day decoration of revolutionary Kiev and decorated the exhibition "Contemporary Art of Ukrainian Village", opened at that time. In 1923 her works appeared in Moscow at the All-Russia agricultural and artisanal-industrial exhibition. From 1932 Sobachko-Shostak lived near Moscow, working at the factory "Exportnabivkan". In 1936 she became a member of ILSH. In the village of Cherkizovo, Pushkinsky District, Moscow Region, one of the streets is named after her.
