Petrus van Shendel (1806-1870) - Belgian painter, printmaker and draughtsman, specializing in night market scene.
Petrus van Shendel was born in Terheyden (Breda). He studied at the Academy in Antwerp, worked and exhibited there from 1822 to 1828.
After numerous trips Petrus van Shendel in 1830, settled in Amsterdam. From 1838 for six years he lived in Rotterdam, then moved to the Hague. Since 1845 he finally settled in Brussels.
Petrus van Shendel was a member of the Academy of Amsterdam, and "Arti Sacrum" in Rotterdam.
Frequently exhibited in the salons of Amsterdam, Antwerp and Den Haag in the period between 1827 and 1867. She also participated in exhibitions in Brussels, Ghent and at the Royal Academy in London. Repeatedly awarded medals, including the gold medal of the Brussels exhibition of 1845, for the painting "Market in the moonlight."
His career, Sandel began as a genre painter, portraitist and engraver, working on the historical and biblical scenes. However, it took quite some time, and he developed the style that made him one of the most popular romantic painters of his time. The basis of his work on the traditions of Dutch painting of the XVII century.
His work can be seen today in the museums of Amiens, Amsterdam, Groningen, Hannover, Leipzig, Berlin (Old national gallery), Melbourne, Montreal, Munich (Neue Pinakothek), nice and Stuttgart.
