About church

The Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye - a masterpiece of world architecture, included in the UNESCO list. It is considered the first stone hipped temple in Russia. The building is made of large bricks; on the base there is a tall tent with clear edges on it in the form of an even-naked cross. A gallery goes around the temple, to which three high porches lead, a carved stone throne is preserved on the gallery near the east wall.

The Church of the Ascension was built by order of Grand Duke Vasily III in the village of Kolomenskoye on the steep bank of the Moskva River, directly above the spring of healing water. Kolomenskoye was the royal residence, the church was intended only for the family of the sovereign and did not have its own parish, therefore, despite the fact that the church looks impressive outside, its interior is small.
