Description of the artwork «Perseus and Andromeda»

Perseus saves Andromeda

After a long journey, Perseus reached the Kingdom of Cepea lying in Ethiopia on the shore of the Ocean. There, on a cliff near the seashore, he saw a beautiful chained Andromeda, daughter of Cepheus. She had to atone for his mother, Cassiopeia. Cassiopeia angered the sea nymphs. Proud of her beauty, she said it all the more beautiful, the Queen Cassiopeia. Angry nymphs and begged the God of the sea Poseidon to punish Kefee and Cassiopeia. Poseidon sent at the request of the nymphs, the monster like a gigantic fish. It surfaced from the depths of the sea and ravaged the possessions of Kepea. Weeping and moaning filled the realm of Coffee. He turned, finally, to the Oracle of Zeus Ammon and asked how to get rid of him from this misery. The Oracle gave the following answer:

– You give your daughter to Andromeda at the mercy of the monster, and then ends the punishment of Poseidon.

The people, hearing the response of the Oracle, forced the king chained Andromeda to a rock by the sea. Pale with terror, stood at the foot of the cliff in the heavy chains of Andromeda; with unspeakable fear, she watched the sea, waiting for that here-here will appear a monster and devour it. Tears were streaming from her eyes, the horror engulfed her at the thought that she must die in the color of a beautiful youth, full of energy, not tasted the joys of life. Her then and saw Perseus. It would take her a lovely statue of white Parian marble, if the sea wind blew her hair and fell from her beautiful eyes big tears. With delight looks at her young hero, and a powerful sense of love for Andromeda lights up in his heart. Perseus quickly went to her and kindly asked her:

– Oh, tell me, fair maiden, whose country it is, give me your name! Tell me what you're here chained to a rock?

Andromeda told, for whose guilt she has to suffer. Doesn't want a beautiful maiden to the hero thought she atones for its guilt. Haven't finished the story of Andromeda, as it ran red-hot through the deep sea, and among the surging waves seemed a monster. It raised its huge head with a gaping mouth. Gave a loud cry of horror Andromeda. Driven mad with grief, ran ashore Kefey and Cassiopeia. They weep bitterly, embracing her daughter. There is no salvation!

Then spoke the son of Zeus, Perseus:

– Much more will you have time to shed tears, little time only to save your daughter. I am the son of Zeus, Perseus, who killed the snakes entwined Gorgon Medusa. Give me my wife, your daughter Andromeda, and I will save her.

Happily agreed Kefey and Cassiopeia. They were ready to do everything to save his daughter. Kefey promised him even the whole Kingdom as a dowry, if only he saved Andromeda. Is near a monster. It is rapidly approaching the cliff, a broad chest cutting through the waves like a ship speeding through the waves, as on wings, from the mighty strokes of the oars of the young boatmen. No further flight of arrows was the monster, when Perseus flew high into the air. His shadow fell into the sea, and with rage the monster rushed at the shadow of the hero. Perseus boldly rushed down upon the monster and plunged deep into his back, the curved blade. Feeling serious wound, high up in the waves of the beast; it beats in the sea like a boar with fierce barking was surrounded by a pack of dogs; then plunges it deep into the water, then rises again. Frantically hits the water monster with his fish tail, and thousands of spray fly up to the top of the coastal cliffs. Foam-covered sea. Opened her mouth, catches the monster on the Perseus, but with the speed of gulls takes off in his winged sandals. Blow after blow he deals. Blood and water gushed from the mouth of a monster, stricken to the death. The wings of the sandals of Perseus wet, they barely keep on the air of a hero. Quickly rushed the mighty son of Danae to the rock, which stood out from the sea, clasped her left hand three times and plunged his sword into the broad chest of the monster. Over a terrible fight. Joyful screaming is coming from the shore. All praise the mighty hero. Lifted shackles with the beautiful Andromeda, and a great triumph, Perseus leads his bride to the Palace of the father of her Kepea.
