Love of lovers

This image represents the Christian virtue of mercy, with its traditional attributes: the children whom the Great Mother protects, a vase at her feet and a pomegranate in the foreground. The painting was commissioned by King Francis I, at whose invitation the artist visited France between June 1518 and March 1519.
