About the job:
All of us have totems assistants from the unrevealed parallel world, not only shamans :). They can be spirits of ancestors, representatives of the vegetable world, but most often animals.
As guardian angels, they protect us, help us in difficult situations, send us signs and give us hints. The only difference is that someone knows about them, sees, hears and intuitively uses the help of his totems. Some do not even know about them, or do not believe in their existence.
And in vain...
Here's what Kenneth Meadows wrote about totems in books:
"The totem is a symbolic 'sensor' that helps to order the interaction of various forces. Because the totem expresses the characteristics of a living being, it is more effective than a sign or geometric symbol. While astrology associates the date of birth with the name of a constellation, Earth Medicine is associated with animal totems on the Shamanic Wheel (e.g. wolf, owl, hawk, beaver or salmon). Animals are closer and clearer to us than star clusters."
