Description of the artwork «Old garden»

You can infinitely talk a lot about the sacred meaning of ancestral home for the inhabitants of the Caucasus and Transcaucasia. About how several generations can live under the same roof - in common works, joys and hardships helping each other to increase the dignity of their ancestors. About this written hundreds of books and folded thousands of songs. But the character and soul of the house is not only in its hearth and cunaty rooms. As the jug is not full of young wine, so the real house is not full of life juices without a garden. Garden ... Here, like people, trees are born and wither. Here the earth thanks for the harvest and punishes for laziness. Here grow up, grow up husband, grow old and go away generations. Here they set the tables and say wise toasts. Here, small children sit on the lap of old people, listening to their stories. Here there is a true honest interaction between nature and man. Interaction bequeathed by God.

Maybe that is why the Garden in Georgian living literature is denoted by the word “Samoth”, i.e. “Paradise”. To cultivate a garden means to cultivate your Paradise on Earth - with great difficulty and respect for space. The garden is the place for the descent of the heavenly Jerusalem.

It is noteworthy that the first shrine of Georgia - the Cross of St. Nino, called upon by the Mother of God to preach the gospel of the Lord in the Kartlian country, was made from a vine that grew in a garden near the blessed cell. The cross made of a vine is like a heavenly sign, a sign of a messenger, a shield and a fence against all visible and invisible enemies. "And Nina came to this land and turned her into a" spiritual garden, "which will bear divine fruit forever." Prior to the shepherds, St. Nino taught that the true path to apostates should be indicated with a cross, not with a sword, for “the holy life-giving tree gives the eternal belly, and its power will dispel the darkness in their hearts”

When Saint Nino came to the Georgian capital Mtskheta, she found shelter in the royal gardener's house. There she set up a hut and “her humble booth became a new temple for the capital”. In 337, King Mirian, who converted to Christianity, started a conversation with Nino about choosing a place to build a large church of 12 apostles. The king said: “I love your blackberry bush and I wish there according to my understanding. But no, I will not spare the royal garden and the height of cedars, the fruitfulness of the foliage and the fragrance of flowers, in it I will build a church of prayer for myself, which will stand forever. ” Thus, the royal garden at the confluence of the Kura and Aragva became a place for New Jerusalem. A three-hundred-year-old cedar grew in that garden, under the roots of which hid a part of the Lord’s chiton, which was brought from Jerusalem by local Jews. We decided to cut down cedar and use for columns. Made six pillars of the side branches, but the trunk did not yield. When Saint Nino read a passionate prayer, a fire-carrying youth appeared, raised a pillar that became life-giving (Svetitskhoveli) and “the sky united to the earth, space was overshadowed by heavenly light, the Head of the newly-established Georgian Church was seen in an inexpressible light”. In the altar of the Abode of God Svetitskhoveli, King Mirian III retained the very blackberry bush in which Nino originally secretly prayed, and the Mtskheta Honest Cross was later made from the Life-giving Pillar.
