Description of the artwork «Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi»

In the small beautiful town of Zugdidi, the former capital of the Megrelian princedom, there is one of the pearls of architecture of the 19th century - the palace complex of the Dadiani princes, which perfectly combined classical European canons of that time with national motifs of Georgian architecture.

The first palace was erected in 1873-78. for Princess Catherine Dadiani. When designing, architect Edgar J. Rice pushed off from the Vorontsov Palace in Alupka. The second palace was built in the 1880s. for her son, the last Mingrelian ruler, designed by Russian architect Leonid Vasiliev. The oldest building of the complex is a church of the XVI century.

During the construction of the complex, unique numismatic materials from the ancient city of Archeopolis (now Nokalakevi) were accidentally discovered on its territory. The finds served as the occasion for the creation of its own museum, which opened in the Royal Palace through the efforts of Prince David Dadiani. Today, the museum fund includes more than 44 thousand exhibits dating from the 1st century BC to the 19th century of the modern era. Among them are the inventory of the Tagilon treasure (1st millennium BC), a golden antique mask, an icon of the mother of the Georgian tsarina Tamara (12th century), ancient monuments that came to Georgia after the fall of Constantinople, European military weapons of the Middle Ages, works paintings and graphics of Western European masters. One of the main exhibits of the museum is the death mask of Napoleon, made of bronze after the death of the great emperor. In total, three such masks were made - one of them is in a private collection, the second is stored in the church of Misaricordia on the island of Elba, and the third went to Georgia from the descendants of Marshal Murat.

Around the Dadiani Palace on an area of 26.4 hectares there is a beautiful Botanical Garden, created in the middle of the XIX century on the initiative of Catherine Chavchavadze-Dadiani, sister of Nina Griboedova. Today, the garden has more than 80 species of flora brought to Georgia from the countries of Southeast Asia, India, Japan, the Mediterranean and America.
