Eugene
siseri

1813−1890
Born in a family with rich artistic traditions. His father was a court portrait painter and miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Isabe (1767–1855), his sister’s husband was theater artist Pierre Luc Charles Siseri, his nephew Eugène Siseri, landscape painter, lithographer and watercolorist, Barbizon.

In his youth, Eugene dreamed of the sea, wanted to become a sailor, but under the influence of his father took up painting. The first drawing lessons he received from Jean-Baptiste Isabe. He began to paint pictures on historical themes, landscapes, but more often he depicted scenes with views of the sea, storms and shipwrecks.

Becoming one of the leading French marinists of the romantic direction, E. Isabe, at the beginning of his work, was engaged almost exclusively in depicting marine species and still lifes. The best of his works in this period of creativity - "Honfleur Coast" and "The Tempest off the coast of Dieppe".

In 1821 he visited Algeria. From 1824 he lived in a living in Honfleur, a port located at the mouth of the Seine opposite Le Havre. In 1826 he moved to San Simeon.

The first time he exhibited his works in the Paris Salon in 1827. In 1830 he participated in an expedition to Algeria as an official artist. However, his paintings created during this period did not find buyers, so he began to devote more interest to historical painting and in this genre achieved great success.

Influenced by the work of English artist Richard Bonington and E. Delacroix, the leading representatives of Romanticism in European painting, he began to create genre works and watercolors, which were much more realistic than those of previous artists of his time. These were historical paintings, portraits with elements of lyricism and drama. The main of his works in this period - "The arrival of Napoleon's ashes on board the ship La Belle Poule", "The Wedding of Henry IV".

Towards the end of his life, he painted pictures depicting dramatic scenes of massacres, duels, fights, catastrophes and accidents.

In his workshop he brought up a number of famous artists, among them Eugen Buden, Jan Barthold Yongkind, and others. He was friends with Oras Vernet.

He was court painter to the King of France, Louis-Philippe I.

He died in Lanyi near Paris. Buried at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
