Alexander
Sergeevich Katsalap

Russia • Moscow • born in 1957 • artist, collector
Graduated from the Moscow State Academic Art Institute. V.I.Surikov. Member of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia.
Alexander Katsalap was born in the Pamirs in 1957 in the family of an officer of the Soviet army. Several episodes related to living in the Pamirs have survived in Alexander's memory. He remembers very well the dusty bus that rushes across the plateau to the lake. On the bus are officers of a military unit, wives, children, cheerful faces, everyone is eager to plunge into the cool water of a mountain lake. When Alexander first came to India in 2008, it seemed to him that he was at home. His place of birth was less than two hundred kilometers from the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, and probably the karma of the place of birth determined his further attachment to India. He visits India at least once a year. In 1961, the family moved to Moscow and settled on Trubnaya Street.

At the age of five, Alexander had a desire to grind figurines out of brick fragments, one of the bottoms, reminiscent of Easter Island idols in shape, stood for many years in an apartment on a chest of drawers. His mother often found Alexander drawing some figurines. Sometimes with a stick in the sand, sometimes with a pencil on sheets of paper. Already at school, his ability to draw showed. With a few hand movements with a pencil, the image of a classmate is ready. The drawing teacher noted his abilities and advised him to study painting.

Alexander Katsalap graduated from the Moscow State Institute. IN AND. Surikov. Until the mid-90s, he painted landscapes and rarely still lifes. The first compositional works appeared in 1995. After a personal exhibition in the Podolsk exhibition hall, a series of works, with the light hand of the art critic N. Dobrundashvili, was called "magic realism". The constant search in the field of pictorial-plastic problems leads Alexander in 1999 to the direction that he calls "noumenal art" or the search for the NOWMEN. The essence of this technique lies in the initial, chaotic application of colored spots, lines on the canvas, followed by the recognition of images, plots, events in this color chaos.

In 2000, the marriage union fell apart, and Alexander, leaving his family, moved from the center of Moscow, from Kolokolnikov Lane, to a dacha in the near Moscow region. Gradually comes the awareness of Noumenal art, art based on intuition, as an art of secondary, even marginal.

The death of a beloved dog in 2007 is reflected in the art of Alexander. For two years, the artist has been painting black works with a starry sky and gratings. A joint exhibition with Alexander Sheko in 2009 at the Zverev Center for Contemporary Art draws a line to this trend. Alexander is looking for a new direction, travels a lot around the country, Europe, India.

By this time, for several years, Alexander had met and made friends with one of the leaders of the movement of the sixties - V.N. Nemukhin. According to Alexander, V. N. Nemukhin had a deep spiritual influence on him.

Shortly before the death of V.N. Nemukhin, examining Alexander's paintings, said to him, "You, never descend from these heights." Alexander often recalls these words of the outstanding sixties, and considers the words of his senior comrade as parting words for further work.

In 2015, Alexander Katsalap presented his new theme "My Territory", on which he has been working since 2011, at a solo exhibition in the KINO gallery, and considers this theme to be the main one in his work.

This theme is related to the artist's residence in a cottage, on a plot of land surrounded by a fence. The theme of his art naturally stems from

his lifestyle. “I don’t need to invent anything,” says the artist, “I have earth, grass under my feet, above my head, the sky, the sun, stars. Everything that is in the vast world is on my site. I am inspired by nature, and suggests themes for paintings. "

In 2018, the next solo exhibition of Alexander Katsalap took place in the A3 gallery. The exhibition was curated by the famous collector, art connoisseur V.A. Dudakov. In a review written by VA Dudakov for the exhibition of Alexander Katsalap, the author writes: “Working in different“ manners ”, always trying on the criterion of“ made-up ”for them, he is equally far from being completely carried away by purely pictorial and plastic techniques, which he fills our exhibition practice to all the already fed up with the "virtuosity" of abstraction, and from the "literary insanity" of the plot or conceptual sense. He is truthful, often straightforward in upholding his right, "his territory", his attitude: the material world, durable, sometimes with mystical reminiscences of symbols and hints, but his own, fenced off from the bustle and tinsel of everyday life. And the signs of this strength - stones, buildings, fences, eternal animals, signs - sometimes reveal their ambiguity outside the intentions put into them by the author. "
