Scottish artist, Stewart Nicol Soutar's artwork is best placed in the category of surrealist contemporary art. Stewart comes from the west coast of Scotland, and much of his artwork depicts scenes where nature and mankind collide, scenes of coastal towns and harbours, devoid of human figures lending a haunting sense to his work.
There is often a darkness to his paintings which brings an emotional depth to his work. Nicol Soutar's use of colour and line creates an interaction with his works which draws you in visually, allowing you to piece together the existence of another place, another time, where each moment spent in front of the canvas draws you further into the scene, allowing further detail to grab your eye and formulate meaning.
