(William Holbrook Beard; April 13, 1825, Pinesville, Ohio - February 20, 1900, Brooklyn, New York) was an American painter and animalist.
Born in Pinesville, Ohio. Studied abroad and was associated with the Dusseldorf School of Painting. In 1861 he moved to New York City; there in 1862 Byrd became a member of the National Academy of Design.
His humorous depictions of animals such as bears, cats, dogs, horses and monkeys were satirical and mocked human vices. These pictures brought him great popularity. He died in Brooklyn. Buried in Green-Wood Cemetery.
