The Deluge. Artist: Comerre, Léon-François (1850-1916).
This painting depicts the great flood in Book 1 of Ovid's Metamorphoses in which Jupiter decides to destroy all of mankind except for the pious couple Deucalion and Pyrrha. Jupiter was unhappy at his creation of man, and instead of using his trademark lightning bolts to destroy mankind which would also leave the world in flames, he chose to flood everyone and spare Deucalion and Pyrrha so that they may repopulate the earth.
