Description of the artwork «Women (Girlfriends)»

Work "Women (podrugi)" could not be better characterizes the earlier work of the artist Sergei Vinogradov. Drawings, sketches and paintings of villagers, he began to create in his student years, during holidays, which he spent in his native Posad Large Salt or in a friends house.

In 1890 Vinogradov moved to Kharkov, where he was offered a position teaching drawing at a vocational school. In the summer he often visited the villages of Parkhomovka and Natalievca Sumy County Kharkov province, where were located the estates of the Moscow sugar manufacturer and art collector Pavel Kharitonenko. During these visits, the artist constantly wrote genre paintings ("Lunch workers", "Children") and portraits of local people, particularly rural women in national dress ("Day laborer", "Baba", "Peasant woman with a rake").

The picture "Baba" was preceded by two studies — the portraits depicted old women. Vinogradov found and wrote his heroines in 1892 in the village of Parkhomivka. Portrait of woman at work "Women" sits on the right, Vinogradov has transferred with etudeon a large canvas with virtually no changes.

Genre painting he conceived for the exhibition of the Wanderers. In January 1893 in a letter to a friend Vinogradov wrote: "I came here (to Kharkov), and sat down at the old ladies... Fear not to commit the image to Mobile, though, and moved forward much already, and dissatisfaction more strongly". Work, he soon finished, but the exhibition never sent.

Meanwhile, the subject of this painting is typical of travelling art. On the bench sat two peasant women. At sunset, we see a hunched figure with sad eyes — both women are immersed in sad reflection. The artist focuses on the work-worn hands of the old woman on the left, in the tan, which, no doubt, during heavy work. The sad mood of the characters to highlight their dusty shoes, worn clothes and set off by a small crimson bundle lying on the bench. This invariably causes the audience thinking about the difficult fate of the village women.

Vinogradov puts his ladies in the center of the picture, balancing the composition. The background objects (trees, linen on the rope, Ukrainian house), discharged with the use of multiple colors create a depth of space. The effect is enhanced by the softening and blurring the contours of objects as their distance from the front edge of the canvas.

The surrounding scenery — green grass, clear blue sky contrasts with the sad mood of the ladies. Life, despite all the bitterness continues. That woman vigorously behind hanging Laundry.

Cold bluish and warm Golden buff shades skilfully intertwined, creating a coherent color scheme. Thanks to the skillful transmission of light effects the space on the canvas filled with air Vinogradova. In "the Women", which thematically "fit"" in a travelling art tradition, has traced impressionistic vision of the artist.
