Every my scarf has its own story. "Embroidery from Shkodra" scarf was inspired by a beautiful garment with embroidery on it at the exhibition of Albanian Traditional Embroidery held in Tirana on March 8, 2014
I took a photo of it. I designed 5 scarves of it. I examined what was behind this fabulous bit of garment of an Albanian woman.
You don't have to be an ethnographer to say confidently that the woman was a rich one. Elaborately embroidered clothing was a mark of wealth and status in any country and it was not for everyday use, but for special occasions.
In Albania the main special occasions were: weeding, childbirth and funeral.
Wedding garments often had to be ordered 3-4 years before the scheduled day of the wedding and to be done by professional embroiderers, who were men. Often this wedding dress served as the best dress of a woman through her entire life and longer preserved as her family treasure.
I sent my photograph of a fragment of an embroidered garment to the experts and collectors of Albanian folk costumes, Linda Spahiu and Luljeta Dano. Both agreed that the woman was from Shkodra and that she was Catholic. I got the name of the garment - pashmagne - and the special occasion for wearing this garment: a rainy day.
On a rainy day, which can be many days in a row in Shkodra, a rich Catholic woman going to a special event might put on one of these densely embroidered raincoats (pashmagne). The cut of a pashmane is similar to modern raincoats with the main waterproofing on the upper back and the front.
John Keats said: “A thing of beauty is joy forever”. As a raincoat, pashmagne is out of fashion, but its beauty, imprinted in our silk scarves, will be your joy forever. Beauty never goes out fashion. If it goes out of sight, we bring it back as a stylish, modern, classic accessory with its own story and its magic ability to make us all happier
