Description of the artwork «Church of St. John the Baptist in Kerch.»
The Church of St. John the Baptist in Kerch is one of the oldest temples in Russia and a monument of Byzantine art with a cross-domed layout. According to legend, the construction of the temple was blessed by the Apostle Andrew the First-Called in honor of his first teacher, John the Baptist. The remains of the construction of the VI century were used as the foundation for a new temple around the X century. An interesting feature of the temple is the use of alternating rows of white limestone blocks and red finely burnt bricks - plinths in the masonry of walls.
