Description of the artwork «Engraving plate No 49»
The engraving plate No 49, approx. 25 cm diameter, silver alloy, produced between 1830 - 1845. Dreden - Meissen.
According to internal engraving instructions (miniature images) by C.G. Carus designed by C.D. Friedrich accompanied by art theory, under whose direction G.F. Kersting, his specialists produced over years of work.
Client: Johann I. King of Saxony (king since 1854). The central image, the plate bottom was based on the motif of William Hogarth "Canvassing for Votes", is aligned to an independent visual language by changing features in the central engraved image, the plate bottom. The only bi-lingual commonality is the mythological reference to Heracles from the Greek world of legends. Examples of images in the micrometer dimension incorporated into the engraving of No 49, point to the Dante verse. In the context of a historically understandable Reformation story. As well as the founder of the lodge of the Freemasons in Germany J.W. von Zinnendorf, 18th century, to the Danish King Christian IV., and to Albrecht von Brandenburg. The engravings placed on the edge of the plate should be viewed in relation to the allegorically oriented central image. Supported by micrometer images, which are incorporated into the engraving image in grooves etc. (up to now not all micrometer work could be recorded), the history of these people is presented in the prevailing time.
The engraved plate No 49 was purchased in 2004 from an Arab dealer (Syrian) at a Central Asian bazaar from the current owner with a receipt.
Reg .: ALR 6600. LP - London / IP-Art Bruessel.
