Semyon Vasilyevich Kaminsky was born on February 27, 1894, in Belorussia, in the village of Kamenka. The boy's ability to draw showed itself early. In the early 1920s, in Vitebsk, the future artist regularly attended classes in the studio of Yuri Moiseyevich Pan - the founder of the first Belarusian art school and the teacher of the famous Vitebsk artist Marc Chagall. Semyon was capable and the most favorite of the old master's students.
