Description of the artwork «Cathedral of Siena»
The lower facade was decorated by Giovani Pisano in the 80s-90s of the 13th century. The tympanum of the three entrance gables contains (without signatures) the reliefs of the 3 Saints of Siena. The statues of lions at the central entrance serve as a base for the statues of the biblical kings David and Solomon. Figures crowning the lower portal on the left: Isaiah, Valaam (the one to whom the Donkey of Valaam inspired: "A star is rising from the East" - he holds this inscription in his hands); Plato, Daniel and one of the sibyl-prophets. To the right of the central entrance are: Moses and Simeon the God-Receiver, Miriam - the sister of Moses and Aristotle. Among the prophets of Christ, immortalized on the facade of the Siena Cathedral, thus, along with the biblical prophets, were the Greek Sibyls and the ancient philosophers. Their statues rest on statues of horses and bulls.
