Volga Bulgaria is a medieval highly developed state, which was located on the territories of modern Chuvashia, Tatarstan and Bashkiria. The year 1223 is considered to be the beginning of the Mongol invasion of these lands. The first battles were lost by the Mongols. It took more than 15 years for the Mongols to fully conquer Bulgaria. The leopard (white leopard), a beast mentioned in the legends of Bulgaria, is also present on the symbols of modern Tatarstan.
