Earthquake in Torre del Greco

Painting, 1851, 55×78.5 cm

Description of the artwork «Earthquake in Torre del Greco»

In order to describe the event, the artist went to the scene of the disaster, producing a sketch which he then transferred onto the canvas. The model for this work is the painting of the Melfi Earthquake, painted in 1851 by Nicola Palizzi, his friend and teacher, from which Cammarano departed for a more synthetic and expressive rendering of reality, rather than analytical and precise. In fact, rather than Palizzi's influence, the work shows references to 17th-century Neapolitan painting, in particular to Micco Spadaro, whose recovery enabled him to break free from the rigid academic canons.
