The breach of Porta Pia

Painting, 1871, 290×467 cm

Description of the artwork «The breach of Porta Pia»

The first of the works inspired by the epic deeds of the Risorgimento and by a genre of celebratory painting with strongly rhetorical overtones, Carica dei Bersaglieri, or Savoy, was commissioned directly by Victor Emmanuel II. Renouncing any reference to the environment, Cammarano does not depict the moment of the battle, but concentrates on the movement and impetuous gait of the bersaglieri, projected forward almost as if to break through the canvas.
