Foton-1(Yormala Group)

Icon painting, 2022, 75×75×3 cm

Description of the artwork «Foton-1(Yormala Group)»

The first of the large-format portraits. A couple of months ago I painted a small picture called "Photon", a face in a spacesuit on a gold background. But something was missing from the idea and I put it aside. And then the other day I remembered an episode from Noonworld by the Strugatsky brothers, and everything began to fall into place:
"Lev Abalkin's parents did not exist - at least in the usual sense of the word. Perhaps they did not exist at all. The fact is that forty-odd years ago Stella Vladimirovna and Vyacheslav Borisovich, as part of the "Yormala" group on the unique starship "Darkness" made a dive into the Black Hole EN 200056. There was no contact with them, and could not be according to modern concepts. Lev Abalkin, it turns out, was their posthumous child. Of course, the word "posthumous" in this context is not quite accurate: it was quite possible to assume that his parents were still alive and would live for millions of years more in our time scale, but, from the point of view of an earthling, they were, of course, still dead. They had no children, and in leaving our universe forever, they, like many couples before them and after them in a similar situation, left a mother's egg fertilized with the father's seed at the Institute of Life. When it became clear that the plunge had succeeded, that they would no longer return, the cell was activated, and so Leo Abalkin, the posthumous son of living parents, was born."
This episode is only briefly mentioned in the book, but it made an impression on me at one time. I want to write a series of such portraits, with a reference to this expedition. The name "Photon" is symbolic in this context. It is both particles of light and the light of knowledge.
