Description of the artwork «Spanish dancer in lace mantilla»

Mary Cassatt spent several months in Spain in the early 1870s. She first went to Madrid, where she copied paintings by Spanish masters, and then established a studio in Seville. She made a series of paintings of Spanish life that emphasized the beauty and clothing of local women. This painting was exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1874 under the title Ida, where it caught the attention of the French Impressionist Edgar Degas.
