Description of the artwork «Mermaid»
The mermaid is a character of East Slavic mythology, known for a variety of semantic connotations: in the north of Russia the mermaid was perceived as something bookish and scholarly, in the south - on the contrary, playful; in ancient myths it was identified with the beginning of life, but already in the Middle Ages the image became covered with numerous stories about soulless creatures of unmatched beauty, marriage with whom can be a fatal outcome.
Equally ambiguous is the concept of love in the modern world, which on the one hand is romanticized by Hollywood melodramas, on the other hand is transformed by the rules of the new ethics and trends of expanding the boundaries of gender identity, but in the end the term itself becomes even more legendary in a world where almost no one can answer the question "what is love?
The canvas captures the moment of a man's kiss with the silhouette of a mermaid, whose facial features are almost indistinguishable and dissolved in the featureless texture of the background. The romantic scene becomes a metaphor for modern man's pursuit of love, which sometimes appears in the metropolis like a mirage of half-man-half-fish on the horizon, sometimes deceives insidiously, and sometimes really becomes a twist of new life.
