Like the World of Art artists who had a predilection for depicting 18th-century imperial Russia, contemporary artists often romanticize late 19th- and early 20th-century Russia, echoes of a bygone Empire. One of Nicholas II's strongest hobbies was hunting. The hunting on Baranova's canvas is shown from a celebratory, entertaining side. However, it is impossible not to note some of the symbolism laid down by the artist. We see lively stylized figures in colorful clothing, contrasting with the blindingly white snow, hunter trumpeting the horn, frisking elegant greyhounds. Only the face of Nicholas attracts attention with its tension and concentration amidst the reigning merriment.
