He studied at the Stroganov School (1913 - 1918) with F.F. Fedorovsky, in the workshops of the
People's House (1913 - 1916) by D. Polenov
and in VHUTEMAS (1918 - 1923) with A. Lentulov, V. Tatlin, D.P. Sterenberg.

In 1924 - 1940 - the chief artist of the Theater of the name of MGSPS,
in 1941 - 1949 - MAMT named after K.S. Stanislavsky and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko,
since 1951 - the Maly Theater. Collaborated with the State Academic Bolshoi Theater and the Moscow Art Theater
